It’s been obvious to me from the get-go that Joe is not and will never be on board for Gendrya.
And from his point of view, I can’t blame him. His only love interest so far is 10yrs his junior. Not a big deal if she was 25 and he 35, or if he was 30 and she 20 but she’s nowhere near those ages yet. Added to that, he met her when she was a baby. I don’t think he’ll ever see her as a woman. It doesn’t matter how much she fills out or if she grows another inch or two, he’ll still remember her how she was when he met her. He probably feels like he’ll be defiling her in some way, taking away all her “firsts”. No one wants to see themselves as a pedo.
I’ve basically accepted the fact that unless D&D swap Joe &/or Maisie for more age-compatible actors (perish the thought), Gendrya may never happen.
However, Joe the man aside, he is an actor and this is work. He doesn’t need to feel real things for her, just fake it enough for us to buy it (although I can’t deny that knowing how he feels about it might ruin it for me because I’ll be wondering just how awkward he felt filming it). It’s kind of ironic that the “child” in this situation is a bit more professional about it than the adult. Granted, I think Maisie may have a bit of a crush on Joe and who can blame her? He’s gorgeous and she knows that she’s not a little girl anymore but he can’t see the woman she’s becoming because he’s blinded by her age.
If I could say anything to him, it would be this: Kirsten Dunst and Brad Pitt. Suck it up, Joe, and do what you have to do.
All this conjecture is a bit premature anyway. Right now, we don’t even know if or when Gendry and Arya will cross paths again or under what circumstances. Although GRRM has hinted at more between them than just a platonic relationship, it’s not fleshed out enough for us to make assumptions no matter how much we personally want it to happen. For all we know he may just decide to kill Gendry in the next book because he isn’t really a huge contender for the throne, not like Daenerys and Jon probably are. Maybe he’ll become a eunuch. lol
I’m not disappointed in Joe in any way because he didn’t say anything in this new interview that he hasn’t already said, more or less. At least he’s honest.
I think a large part of his reservations may stem from the fact that fans are clamouring for Gendrya and he’s looking at the highly-sexed atmosphere of the show and it freaks him out because he fears that one day he may be called upon to do those things with Maisie but at most I’d expect a chaste kiss of sorts and I would honestly be satisfied with that because it’s better than nothing and it fits the characters. There’s a sweet innocence to Gendrya that doesn’t lend to their throwing down on furs and rutting, if you know what I mean. It’s out of character. So if I want the more risqué stuff, there’s tons of fanfiction to get me by.
Hopefully, if the time comes, Joe can put his personal baggage aside and just do what’s needed of him. I have faith.
